Black Mammalogists Week celebrates diversity in the discipline

Following on the success of Black Birders Week, September’s Black Mammalogists Week will highlight the contributions by past and present Black mammalogists and provide opportunities for Black scientists who work with mammals to connect. Taking place Sept. 13 to 19, the week was created in partnership with the American Society of Mammalogists. Each day will focus on a specific topic, such as Misunderstood Mammal Monday, in which biologists will dispel myths about unpopular species, and Forage Friday, which will cover hunting while Black. “In our ideal future, young Black people will realize that they are not only welcome, but needed and vital, to the future of this field,” organizers wrote on the event website.
