The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is planning to reopen a wildlife management area.

The Neel Family-Pine Log Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will encompass 14,640 acres in Bartow and Cherokee counties in northern Georgia. This land includes longleaf pine stands, an imperiled ecosystem, and will be open to outdoor recreation.

The new WMA replaced the previous Pine Log WMA, which was leased from 1977 to 2023. It was established with the help of the Neel family that owned it. “Over the last four years, we never lost sight of the goal to acquire Pine Log and permanently secure it for public recreation and wildlife conservation,” said DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon in a press release.

The new WMA will be open in time for turkey hunting season, the agency said—it’s about an hour from Atlanta.
