In the featured article for this issue, researchers looked at how coating developing raven (Corvus corax) eggs in nontoxic oil affects raven population density and reproductive success. Since ravens are major predators of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), researchers wondered how oiling would affect nest survival and population growth of sage-grouse nearby. The team uncovered that applying oil to raven eggs reduced hatchability by 94.5% and reduced raven densities. Sage-grouse benefited. Nest survival more than doubled when eggs were oiled and sage-grouse abundance increased by 44%.
