Warming waters bring more whale collisions with ships

As oceans warm, more and more whales are straying into shipping lanes in search of food, researchers found, causing an increase in fatal collisions with ships. That includes blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) off the West Coast of North America and North American right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) off the East Coast. Off the coast of California, researchers found, whale strikes have tripled. The increase is an additional blow to the endangered right whale, which only number about 400.
