US and China Agree to Near Total Ban on Ivory Trade

On September 25, the White House announced an agreement between the US and China to enact near total bans on the import and export of ivory within each country. This announcement comes after a May decision from China to phase out the country’s legal manufacturing and sale of ivory products, as well as a July announcement from the US to impose a near ban on imports and exports of ivory items. Also disclosed in this joint statement were plans for the two countries to participate in joint training and exchanges of information related to the ivory trade. The two countries aim to seek out other nations to engage in this effort.
