An hour earlier, the marmot had spotted the fox on the slopes of China’s Qulian Mountains. It raised an alarm, but the fox lay low, waiting. When the marmot emerged in search of food, photographer Yongqing Bao captured this image of the two species converging. The image won Bao the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2019 award from London’s Natural History Museum.

“This compelling picture captures nature’s ultimate challenge — its battle for survival,” Natural History Museum director Michael Dixon said.
