Video: Rare Sierra Nevada red fox caught on camera

Jon Nelson, a wildlife curator at the High Desert Museum, and staff with the Oregon Zoo believed they spotted a Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) den and fox pups earlier this spring in the Oregon’s Cascade Mountain Range in the Deschutes National Forest. A recently released camera trap video proved they were right. After placing cameras in the area, the team reviewed the footage and saw three pups playing with one another under their parents’ supervision. Nelson says this is the first natal den for the species discovered in the region. They confirmed the foxes were Sierra Nevada red foxes after collecting a fur sample and conducting genetic tests.
