As TWS prepares for its first ever virtual conference, it’s a good time to look at how technology is transforming the profession. In the September/October issue of The Wildlife Professional, we take an in-depth look at how artificial intelligence and machine learning are contributing to wildlife research and conservation. The technology is helping wildlifers identify individual animals, monitor populations, analyze satellite images and process vast amounts of data never before possible, enhancing the profession’s ability to conduct science-based management and conservation.
Contributed articles look at how artificial intelligence and bioacoustic technology are helping researchers study northern spotted owls, and how the USDA-Wildlife Services National Wildlife Research Center Technology Transfer program collaborates with partners to develop new technologies in the wildlife profession. Others articles examine how wildlife ballot measures have impacted wildlife professionals and their work, the importance of wellness for wildlifers, 30 years of Partners in Flight and important strides in advancing the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.
