Airstrip to land at Louisiana refuge

Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Grand Isle Independent Levee District are planning to build an airstrip on the Elmer’s Island Wildlife Refuge. Officials say the Grand Isle Airport at Elmer’s Island could help bring in more visitors to the refuge and aid in the creation of a research lab and oyster hatchery. Facilities would include a hangar, fuel tanks, fueling area, aircraft ramp and tie down and a terminal building.
