No one could have predicted the transformations that have taken place in our world since the COVID-19 pandemic came to our attention a year ago. All of us have seen our lives affected by the disease and lockdown measures to deal with it. Wildlife also has been affected in a wide variety of ways. The pandemic has provided a unique experiment that no one would have wished for, but it is shedding light on the many ways our use of natural spaces affects wildlife populations.

Our cover feature takes a look at what we are learning about these relationships. Contributed pieces examine the pandemic’s effects on the wildlife profession and its professionals, with insights on graduate students, early career professionals, tribal natural resource programs and government agencies.

In this issue, we also feature the 2020 Aldo Leopold Memorial Award presentation, delivered by 2019 award recipient W. Alan Wentz. In his article, he encourages us to stay engaged with policy and recognize that wildlife science and policy are inseparable.
