Nations take action on plastic pollution treaty

Negotiators are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, this week to try to work out a new global treaty to reduce plastic pollution. The Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly plans to bring together representatives from 193 countries to find ways to reduce the problem, which can negatively affect wildlife in the oceans and other ecosystems around the world. “It’s clear that plastic bags, discarded fishing gear and microplastics can kill wildlife,” Science reports, “but scientists are just beginning to figure out how to calculate the risks.
