Turning Environmental Tragedies into Wildlife Conservation Strategies: The Mississippi Gulf Coast Story
The MS Gulf Coast has an array of ecosystems ranging from the longleaf uplands to the barrier islands. This natural resource diversity has led to a robust economy and culture tied to seafood, ship building, military installations, forestry, and outdoor recreation. However, in the past decade the region’s economy and landscape has gone through a dramatic transformation after the devastating impacts of Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill. As a result, municipalities, industry, and natural resource managers have been forced to adapt on how they manage the needs of both humans and wildlife in this new environment. Attendees will learn about the broad conservation efforts taking place in the region from professionals involved in the effort and spending time in the field getting firsthand experience with the issues. Additionally, other statewide wildlife and conservation issues like Chronic Wasting Disease and an update on the 2018 Farm Bill will be discussed. The Annual Meeting will also provide opportunities for professionals and students to present their recent research, education, and management programs along with several continuing education and networking opportunities including a Chartered Boat Tour to Ship Island Thursday afternoon.
August 12th – Last day conference rate ($93.00/night) hotel rooms are available.
August 15th – Abstract for presentations and posters and publication awards are due.
