Bighorns Get Reprieve From Canceled Solar Plant in Mojave
The solar heat was turned down on bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), desert tortoises (genus Gopherus) and other wildlife last week after Los Angeles city officials canceled a massive solar power project. The Soda Mountain Solar Project was halted after a review by the Department of Water and Power found that other renewable energy projects in the works would be cheaper and easier to deliver for the city. Opponents of the project believe the solar panels would compromise efforts to restore bighorn migration routes in an area south of Baker, Calif. less than a mile from the Mojave National Preserve.
