Feds award $125M in wildlife crossing grants

Pilot projects will be funded in 16 states

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration is providing $125 million in grants for wildlife crossings in 16 states. The Wildlife Crossing Pilot program’s goal is to improve safety for wildlife and drivers as well as improve habitat connectivity. “With funding made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the projects moving forward in 16 states will reduce collisions between drivers and wildlife, create places for wildlife to safely move over and under highways, and help preserve American life and property,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement. Funding projects include replacing an existing bridge in western Massachusetts with a wildlife overpass and building three underpasses in Idaho.
