Restoration work revives Breton Island
The barrier island provides important habitat for seabirds
Louisiana’s Breton Island is a crucial area for nesting pelicans and other seabirds, but erosion was threatening its future. Using settlement money from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a host of partners worked together to restore the barrier island. Crews grew the island from 290 acres to 426 acres, planting grasses and mangroves to help sustain it and restore lost habitats.
