NC agencies partner to make highways safer for wildlife
Wildlife and transportation officials are working to create more wildlife crossings
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are working together to help wildlife navigate busy roads. The two agencies have signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue wildlife crossings and fencing throughout the 80,000 miles of state-maintained highways. In recent years, 26 wildlife passages have been created in the state and another 11 are in the works. The state hopes to tap into the $350 million federal Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program, part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill.
