In coronavirus’ wake, China bans wildlife trade, consumption

In the wake of the outbreak of the latest coronavirus, China has banned the consumption and illegal trade of wild animals. Citing Chinese state media, CNN reports that the National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban on Monday to help “safeguard public health and ecological security.” The effort aims to “completely ban the eating of wild animals,” state media reported, while also “cracking down on illegal trade of wildlife.” Biologists believe the virus was spread from a wildlife market in Wuhan, China.
