Oil spill funds aid Louisiana rookery

Cleanup funds from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill are rebuilding a pelican rookery on a barrier island off the Louisiana coast. Queen Bess Island supports the state’s third-largest brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) colony, but it was heavily affected by oil after the disaster. Plans call for restoring 30 acres for pelicans and 7 acres for terns and skimmers.
