Nevada recognized for wildlife crossings

Nevada wildlife and highway officials have been recognized for their work in building wildlife overpasses to increase safety for both motorists and animals. The Federal Highway Administration issued the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Department of Wildlife an environmental excellence award for the nine crossings, which were in Elko County on Interstate 80 and U.S. 93. About 60 miles of wildlife fencing was put in place along the highway to direct wildlife to the crossings, which are covered with native soils and vegetation. The two departments worked together to identify critical deer migration and roadway crossings points, using GPS collars to track hundreds of deer.
