Condor recovery reaches hatchling milestone

A California condor chick that hatched in a nest on a cliff in Zion National Park became a milestone for the efforts to recover the endangered species. It received the studbook number 1000 — the 1,000^th condor chick hatched under the recovery program. Once down to 22 individuals, the California condor population is now over 500, with more than half in the wild. “We are closer to recovery, and our ultimate goal is a self-sustaining population,” Chris Parish, director of conservation at the Peregrine Fund, a partner in the recovery program, told The Washington Post.
