Two wolves arrive at Isle Royale

A pair of gray wolves (Canis lupus) have arrived at Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park, beginning an effort to restore the species there. A 4-year-old female and 5-year-old male arrived by plane last week from the Grand Portage Indian Reservation, the Associated Press reports. The National Park Service plans to bring in four more wolves this fall with the hope of building a population of 20 to 30 wolves to control moose (Alces alces) numbers. On Friday, the Park Service announced that a third wolf died during efforts to relocate it from the mainland.
