Wildlife experts use drones to deter predators

To protect humans and livestock, scientists in the western U.S. find drones are an effective, nonlethal hazing method for grizzly bears

As Terry Vandenbos hurried to protect his cattle from a grizzly bear on his Montana ranch, he noticed that the bear suddenly began sprinting away while a drone overhead followed the bear. Wesley Sarmento, a former grizzly bear management specialist for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, was operating the drone, carefully ensuring that this hazing sent the bear away for good. Sarmento’s forthcoming study in the journal Frontiers of Conservation Science shows that drones outperformed all other hazing methods, providing a safe way to move grizzly bears that is both safe for humans and the animals.
