Watch: Tracking curlews across their migration

North Dakota biologists are trying to better understand this iconic bird

Long-billed curlews are a striking presence on North Dakota grasslands. Researchers with the state Game and Fish Department have been studying the birds to better understand their habitat use. Using transmitters, biologists tracked migrations to Texas and Mexico and stopover points along the way. Long-billed curlews (Numenius americanus) are a species of conservation concern in the state, due to declining numbers and a contracting range.
