Great blue heron

Video: Vancouver’s Stanley Park Kicks Off Blue Heron Cam

One of the largest urban colonies of Pacific great blue herons (Ardea herodias) in North America sits right in the middle of Canada’s third biggest city. At 45-54 inches tall, great blue herons are the largest herons in North America and are found from Alaska all the way down to South America. While birds east of the Rocky Mountains are migratory, the Pacific populations usually stay put all year. This Vancouver population of 100-200 birds hangs out by the tennis courts in Stanley Park – an urban swath of greenery surrounded by English Bay and the Vancouver Harbor.
