In 2014, citizen scientists combing the beaches in the San Francisco Bay area got the first glimpse of an unfolding tragedy. Droves of dead Cassin’s auklets were scattered across the sand, pointing to a mystery that wildlife biologists are still grappling with. In the July/August issue of The Wildlife Professional, our cover story looks at what is behind a mysterious die-offs of Pacific seabirds in recent years and how it is affecting populations from California to Alaska. In our special focus, contributors look at climate adaptation and new approaches that wildlife managers can take to deal with changing ecological conditions. We also look at how wildlife biologists can deal with the “ecogrief” they experience and get a peek at the educational sessions awaiting at this year’s in-person Annual Conference in Spokane, Washington.
