To assess the age of waterfowl, biologists typically need to handle them to look for detailed or concealed traits. That works for birds that are commonly captured or harvested, but what about other waterfowl? In a study in the December issue of the Wildlife Society Bulletin, researchers developed guidelines to estimate age class of wintering Barrow’s goldeneyes using observational surveys. Other articles look at using canopy reduction and fire to improve coastal plain hardwoods for deer and turkeys, using low-cost GPS loggers for tortoises and engaging citizen scientists to help monitor frogs using cell phones.
