Watch: GPS helps track bears after rehab
California is using GPS collars on every black bear returned to the wild
When wildlife is released from rehabilitation facilities, it’s hard to know how well the animals fare back in the wild. In California, managers are using GPS technology to get a better grasp on what happens to black bears (Ursus americanus) after they’re released. This year, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife started using GPS collars to track all bears released back into the wild from rehab facilities. Managers may also use the technology to watch for bears heading toward neighborhoods so they can steer them elsewhere and avoid conflicts.
Watch below as two orphaned cubs leave a rehab facility to go back to the wild.
