White-nose syndrome takes a toll on Texas bats
The deadly disease was first detected in the state in 2020
Since white-nose syndrome was first detected in Texas in 2020, biologists have watched a steady decrease in bat numbers. In some caves, bats have disappeared altogether. At Fort Cavazos, where that first bat with the fatal disease was detected in the state, a colony of 30,000 bats was eliminated.
“We’d lose one after the next, day after day. We just couldn’t turn them around,” Lee Mackenzie, of the Austin Bat Refuge, told Undark.
