Causes of mortality can have a significant impact on how managers set harvest numbers. In the January issue of the Journal of Wildlife Management, researchers looked at causes and rates of mortality from 390 radio-collared moose followed throughout their lives. Their findings suggest that liberal harvests of female moose to reduce populations improved the animals’ nutrition and reproduction and may have avoided a precipitous decline due to overabundance and extreme snow depths.

Other articles include a look at den site selection by Florida spotted skunks, using conservation dogs to detect reptiles and barred owls effects on spotted owls.
