Last male northern white rhino dies

Australian artists known as Gillie and Marc pose with the last surviving male northern white rhino in this February 2017 photo. The rhino died on Monday, leaving only two females of the subspecies remaining.

The last male northern white rhinoceros has died.

Nicknamed Sudan, the 45-year-old rhino was one of just three remaining rhinos of the sub-species, and the only male. All three have been kept under armed guard at a conservancy in Kenya to protect them from poachers.
